Climate change responsible for rising temperature, COVID-19

Kathmandu, July 30 Record breaking temperature and COVID-19 are both warnings that humanity must reset its relationship with nature and address climate crisis, or face potentially deadlier pandemics and disasters, warned Save the Children, climate scientists, and youth activists in a press release issued today. The pandemic has largely buried public concern and discussion in Asia-Pacific and worldwide about climate emergency, according to new analysis by Save the Children, even though global heating remains the number one threat to the region’s societies and their children, it said. This is set to witness one of the top two warmest years in 141 years of temperature records. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States reports that the first half of 2020 was the second warmest January-June period on record. This was partly driven by record heat in Siberia in northern Asia, where average temperature in June was more than five degree Celsius above normal. ...

Supreme Court rejects plea to halt compensation hearing

KATHMANDU, JULY 29 The Supreme Court has rejected US-Bangla Airlines’ request to halt the hearing of a case filed by the families of seven deceased passengers who were all pursuing their MBBS in Bangladesh. After the hearing of both sides on Sunday, the apex court stated that no such interim order could be issued in the ongoing case. A division bench of Chief Judge Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha and Judge Purushottam Bhandari issued the decision, observing that halting the hearing of such a sensitive case, which was under consideration at the district court, would be unjustifiable. Moreover, such a decision might affect the families of victims, forcing the apex court to reject the company’s demand to halt the case, said Bidur Man Shrestha, father of one of the deceased students. According to him, they received the SC order today and came to know that the apex court had called for another hearing on August 25. The 12 March 2018 flight from Dhaka crash-landed at Kathmandu airport and ...

Twitter temporarily restricts Donald Trump Jr’s account over COVID-19 video

Twitter Inc said on Tuesday it had restricted Donald  Trump  Jr’s ability to tweet from his account for 12 hours, after it required him to delete a post that violated the social media site’s policy on coronavirus misinformation. The eldest son of US President Donald  Trump  posted a since-deleted tweet on Monday with a viral video of doctors talking about the drug hydroxychloroquine. The video was posted by others on Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc-owned YouTube and taken down for breaking those sites’ rules on COVID-19 misinformation after racking up tens of millions of views. The US Food and Drug Administration last month revoked its emergency-use authorization for hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 after several studies cast doubt on its effectiveness. The president regularly promoted the drug and said he had used it himself. “They’re censoring my account. They’re censoring others,” Donald  Trump  Jr. said in an interview with Fox News Channel later ...
